Job Summary
The Labor Relations Specialist reports to the Head of Labor Relations and works with a team of labor relations specialists to independently bargain collective bargaining agreements, provide day-to-day advice and counsel to all levels of leadership and human resources related to establishing and maintaining effective labor management relations across Sanford. The position is also responsible for assisting the team in maintaining the union-free advantage in the facilities which are not unionized. Establishes and maintains effective labor-management relations at all levels. Interprets Sanford's collective bargaining agreements to ensure proper compliance and competitive positioning for negotiations. This includes proactive solutions to current issues, and educating leaders and other human resource centers of excellence on National Labor Relations Act and collective bargaining agreement compliance.
Develops strategic bargaining proposals and independently negotiates bargaining agreements, demonstrating confidence and skill under high stakes and high pressure. Upon completion of bargaining, works with internal clients and departments in the implementation and communication of changes in CBA wages, benefits and other contractual terms.
Administers the grievance process, adheres to grievance timelines, provides responses to the unions, and supports and counsels leaders throughout the various steps of the process. Assists legal counsel in responding to unfair labor practice charges and arbitrated grievances. In addition, brainstorms solutions to complicated situations and executes research and resolution of certain contractual disputes and obligations.
Provides expertise to support or conduct training sessions for leaders related to managing in a unionized environment and maintaining positive employee relations.
Assists in organizing attempts on non-union facilities and assists with strategies where needed to support the organization's philosophy of maintaining the union-free advantage in those facilities which are not represented by unions.
Handles confidential information in a mature and professional manner. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Displays strong attention to detail and accuracy. Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills with both internal and external relationships.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, labor or related field required or five or more years’ relevant experience.
Minimum five years’ experience in the labor relations field or a related profession. Labor Relations experience within a healthcare setting is a plus.
Experience in leading labor negotiations and responding to union organizing attempts is preferred.
A human resources generalist background, including solid working knowledge of core labor and employment law, related state and federal laws, employee relations, compensation and benefits practices is preferred.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills as well as experience and skills with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other Office software tools required.
